Job description
A West London Borough seek a School Travel Advisor to be appointed to work within the Council's Transport Planning Team.
The successful candidate must be able to prove a genuine desire/passion to take ownership of this interesting and rewarding project.
You will be required:
* To work with schools (Heads, Governors and Parents) to assist them to produce School Travel Plans that seek ways to encourage children to walk and cycle to school rather than rely on being driven by car
*Identify road safety concerns for journey to school trips.
*Commission and supervising engineering consultants to produce highway proposals to meet the needs of each school such as pedestrian crossings, waiting restrictions etc.
* Carrying out competitions and campaigns with schools particularly around the theme of encouraging walking and cycling to school.
*Liase closely with other members of the Transport Planning Team and with other teams especially Programmes, Monitoring, and Traffic Management.
* Write Committee reports that summarise and justify proposals, commissioning public consultation documents and answering queries from the public and councillors.

Candidates can be transport planners, town planners, community planners, regional planners who would like to specialise in this area of transport planning for a few months.
OR: people qualified in other spheres such as journalism, public relations etc who would be interested in this area of work.
The skills needed are:
· Ability to outreach to schools on their own, persuading them to prepare plans and take part in activities when the schools are already busy with other work!
· Project Management skills for project and budget monitoring and reporting.
· Ability to address an assembly of 100+ children and explain what you want from them !!
· Ability to critically assess consultants' technical submissions from the point of view of getting the school what it needs in terms of highway measures.
