Start Chemist Purpose: To prepare a range of radiopharmaceuticals, on a routine basis, for in house clinical PET studies under a GMP environment and to operate the cyclotrons and associated plant. Responsibilities/Duties: 1. To carry out the routine production of a variety of radiopharmaceuticals, including 11C, 18F and 15O2 compounds as well as the quality control on the 15O2 gases, using a range of techniques including HPLC. 2. Maintain production, laboratory and cyclotron apparatus to a high standard to ensure successful production of ligands and efficient operation of the cyclotrons, in accordance with a planned preventative maintenance schedule and also to comply with all regulatory authorities. 3. Preparation of radiopharmaceutical includes filling of cyclotron targets, set up and operation of the cyclotrons and of remotely controlled chemical processing equipment, formulating and dispensing the radiopharmaceuticals and appropriate record keeping. 4. To be responsible for the efficient operation of the cyclotrons and execution of the cyclotron programme. 5. To adopt safe-working procedures at all times, to fully observe all requisite safety precautions and follow correct operational procedures to ensure protection of personnel around the cyclotron and radiochemistry labs. 6. Some preparations require a working knowledge of aseptic techniques. 7. Ensure that stock levels of consumables, solvents, and gas cylinders are maintained. 8. To carry out any project work as necessary and to write or update SOP's as required. 9. To liase regularly with all team members, quality control/bioanalysis, R&D chemists, biologists, clinicians and radiographers. 10. The post-holder must be able to work on a shift disturbance basis with flexible start and finish times. 11. To adhere, observe, participate and contribute in all areas of health & safety and the EHS framework. 12. To carry out any other additional duties as delegated by the Chemistry & Cyclotron Manager. Experience Skills and knowledge: 1. The post-holder must have a BSc or equivalent in a science subject or appropriate experience in radiopharmaceutical production and/or cyclotron operation. 2. After training 'in-house' the post-holder is expected to carry out established procedures with minimum supervision. 3. The post-holder must have the ability to work practically and be technically minded and to be able to problem solve. 4. Preparations require knowledge of GMP, aseptic techniques and clean room practice. 5. The post-holder must be able to work independently and as a part of a team. 6. Good oral and written skills communication skills are required and good computer literacy. Nature and Scope: The job involves the operation of the cyclotrons and preparing a range of radiopharmaceuticals for use on any of the PET cameras within HIL. The radiopharmaceuticals are produced by equipment produced and maintained by members of HIL, and to standards, which are laid down by the MHRA and good manufacturing practice. Operation of the cyclotrons and production of short-lived isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals for PET is a specialised field with a large amount of experience having to be gained 'on the job'. The short half lives of Fluorine-18, Carbon-11 and Oxygen-15, require work to be done swiftly with a high level of expertise. An awareness of how each chemistry production run fits into the scheme of the day's scanning is also vital if studies are not to be lost due to productions being done too early or late, or clashing with others. The post holder must also be able to work safely with high levels of radioactivity in accordance with HILsafety 658010
