Quantity Surveyor - Cambridgeshire
Red River's client, a successful multi-disciplinary building services company, is currently seeking a Quantity Surveyor to be based at their offices near Cambridge.
Reporting to the Contracts Director, the successful applicant will undertake full responsibility for surveying activities on allocated contracts, from contract award to agreement of final account, with the objective to maintain financial control of contracts and to increase profitability and cash flow for the Company.
The most important requirement is to ensure that projects maintain a positive cash flow position at all times. This will be achieved through accurate and effective management of financial expenditure. Accurate costing of claims/valuations and variations are key to this objective and must remain paramount in work ethics.
Main Duties:
* Prepare monthly valuation applications in adequate time for inclusion within the Main Contract Valuation, including recovery of installation costs, unfixed materials (on and off site), sub-contract claims, variations and, where appropriate, fluctuations and prolongation costs.
* Calculate costs associated with contract variations on an 'as we proceed' basis and at maximum monthly, ensuring variations are costed and reported to Clients Quantity Surveyor/PQS as work proceeds and an up-to-date full summary is incorporated within every valuation.
* Prepare internal financial cost reconciliation reports utilising the Form 'S' template on a monthly basis, incorporating assessments on the Company's final account to Client and validity of any sub-contractor claims received, reporting reasons for additional expenditure.
* Prepare the Final Account and submit to Clients Quantity Surveyor/PQS for their information and agreement. Negotiation of the Final Account with Clients Quantity Surveyor/PQS and attendance at meetings as deemed necessary. The Chief Contracts Surveyor to assist as required.
* Liase with other staff and personnel, particularly Purchasing and Contracts Engineers on cost expenditure and management/recovery within the variation account. This will include investigation into reasons for over expenditure and reporting any differences not covered within Variation account.
* Liase with appropriate personnel in various Departments and maintain good working relationships.
* Liase with our Clients Quantity Surveyor/PQS, to ensure good relations are maintained, checking inclusion of valuation within the Main Contact valuation, ensuring any relevant notifications are issued in association with the Chief Commercial Surveyor.
* Liase with Group Credit Controller on pending payments.
* Obtain and agree Contract Valuation dates and ensure these are adhered to.
* Ensure that correct instruction is received from Client for any additional works and correctly confirmed back to Client.
Qualifications, skills & experience required:
* Significant experience in a similar role.
* Good negotiation skills, including ability formulate and substantiate a coherent argument and be able to follow the argument through to satisfactory conclusion.
* Good numeracy skills.
* A good all round knowledge of the main Forms of Contracts is needed. A thorough knowledge of the following is also required:
** The valuation of variation rules for the contract a particular project has been let under.
** Rules within the Contract referring to entitlement of proper instruction for additional works and remedies for situations of non-instruction.
** Details of the valuation method that will be utilised for a particular contract.
** Details of the payment entitlements under a particular contract and remedies for situations of non-payment.
* A thorough understanding of the following IT packages is required: MS Excel, Word & Contract Master Surveying software.
* The Employee needs a good understanding of Cybercube cost analysis system.
* Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.
* Ability to prioritise their workload and have effective time management techniques.
* Ability to interact and work as part of a team with other members of the Contracts Department.
