Production Supervisor
Shift Manager

1. Main Purpose
Through effective organisation, control and utilisation of all shift production resources, ensure that agreed production schedules, customer requirements and the companies cost control parameters are fully met. In particular with regard to quality, material yield, plant utilisation and within the frame work of Company and Divisional policies procedures and costs. To carry out any duty with due regard to Safety and Environmental obligations for all company personnel and visitors.
2. Principle Accountabilities
2.1 Ensure the effective operation of the shift production sections and efficient utilisation of all resources (plant, equipment, labour and materials/packaging) to meet pre-determine planned production targets, notifying the immediate manager where any aspect seriously deviates from the set standards. Ensure that any agreed overtime working is effectively controlled.
2.2 Through the Shift Team, ensure that labour is fully flexible and effectively utilised, that high levels of productivity are established and maintained both individually and collectively for the shift and that agreed production schedules are fully achieved within the necessary target costs.
2.3 Ensure that Quality standards are effectively communicated, clearly understood and rigorously maintained throughout all production operations. Where appropriate personally assist (or personally carry out) any quality tests with the Shift Quality Technician, and assist in making judgements regarding product conformity. Assist the Shift Quality Technician in making limited modifications to the formulations and process conditions of the machines to optimise yield and product quality, using assistance from additional departments as necessary, e.g. Technical, QA, Process Engineer, etc.
2.4 Ensure that all materials are effectively utilised, that high first pass and final yields are achieved and the wastage (both raw material and finished product) are minimised through correct weighment, careful handling and movement of all materials, with the aim of ‘right first time’ production.
2.5 Ensure the correct use/identification of raw materials, packaging and finished product, maintaining effective recording and booking systems as described in the Company procedures.
2.6 Ensure that all plant, equipment and methods are effectively utilised as specified, and that timely action is taken to overcome process or mechanical/electrical problems to minimise down or idle time through close co-operation with additional departments (i.e. Technical, Process Engineer or Maintenance).
2.7 Ensure that all operations are carried out in line with Legislative Requirements (H&SAWA, etc.), the Company Health and Safety Policy and procedures and that all safety standards and Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) are rigorously maintained and effectively used. With the Shift Safety Representative conduct Routine Safety Inspections as required (normally monthly) to ensure that all safety procedures, machinery, housekeeping and PPE are fully operational and utilised.
2.8 Report all Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses that occur, taking part in any investigation to find the basic causes to help prevent re-occurrence.
2.9 To be able to conduct an emergency evacuation as laid down in the relevant procedure, ensuring the safety of people before other considerations.
2.10 Ensure the maintenance of high standard of housekeeping throughout all areas in line with company requirements, especially those within production. Implement the standards required and the systems required to maintain these standards.
2.11 Ensure the Company’s Environmental systems are followed to minimise releases to the environment as laid down and that any spillages are reported; assist in any clearing operation to minimise contamination.
2.12 Ensure that all employees have the correct induction training in line with the Company procedure, including forklift truck training where necessary. That any off or on-the-job training is effectively carried out, and monitor the effectiveness of the training against required standards. Maintaining individual employee training records as laid down.
2.13 Conduct formal appraisals of Cell Leaders and shift personnel, and fully participate in the training programme initiated by the Company.
2.14 Ensure that the individual strengths and/or abilities of employees are fully and flexibly utilised and that they are effectively motivated. Industrial relationships are developed and those appropriate standards of general conduct, discipline and approach to work, quality and customer care (both internal and external) are effectively maintained.
2.15 Ensure the smooth operation of any shift system, in particular consistency of standards and effective transfer of all information through shift changeovers. To be personally available to overcome production problems or emergencies as required.
2.16 Seek out and recommend practical improvements to the plant, methods, processes and systems that could improve quality and/or cost effectiveness of production as a contribution to the improved performance in the Company. Ensure that any agreed improvements are effectively introduced and that the benefits are realised.
2.17 Ensure that all production reports and records are maintained accurately and up-to-date, in line with current systems of work and that reporting deadlines are met.
2.18 To carry out any special projects or other work as may be requested by Production/ Operations Management.
2.19 Control and record fully the allocation of holidays, attendance records and absence return to work interviews.
2.20 Control and report weekly on the hours worked for each employee on the appropriate shift. Providing accurate signed documentation to the accounts department for the payment of the employees.

5.1 Under the general direction and co-ordination of the Production Manager, the jobholder is responsible for the effective deployment of labour to achieve high levels of productivity, machine utilisation, material yield and product quality with effective standards of house keeping and good working practices.
5.2 Job holder will assist in decisions on product quality against recognised company standards and ensure that all documentation is completed satisfactorily, authorising further tests as required.
5.3 Will be accountable for the control of the labour cost on his shift within budget and in conjunction with the other Shift Supervisors the total direct labour cost to the company budget.
5.4 Take the necessary decisions and actions to quickly remedy any deviations from agreed standards of quality or performance utilising help from additional departments as necessary.
5.5 Participate in the recruitment/selection of operatives. Responsible for effective training and performance of operatives in all respects, including assessment of new operations within agreed procedures, ensuring effective motivation, flexibility, timekeeping, general conduct, discipline and approach to quality, safety of work and customer care (both internal and external) in line with company policies and procedures.
5.6 Operates up to stage two of the Company Grievance and Disciplinary Procedures in close liaison with Production Manager.

7. Knowledge and Experience Required
7.1 Extensive practical experience of products, plant, machinery and an understanding of the technical nature of their operation, in addition to an administrative ability.
7.2 Minimum of 3-5 years of successful supervisory experience of operating in a production shift environment.
7.3 Hold a current forklift truck licence.
7.4 Key requirements are leadership skills, administrative organisation, good motivational and communication skills, and high personal standards particularly with regard to material yield, quality, customer care and costs.
7.5 An active commitment to training and development of all employees on an ongoing basis.
7.6 Have working knowledge of BS EN ISO 9001:2000 procedures in particular
8. Additional Information
8.1 Provide experience and knowledge to resolve problem affecting production, which would normally be resolved by other personnel. Problems may cover areas such as plant breakdown, current production not meeting quality specifications, processing problems, and, technical formulation problems.
8.2 For occasions where the site will be closed be responsible to the securing of the site and the re-opening. The securing of the site is to include making all machines and materials safe, locking of all external doors, locking site gates, and setting the intruder alarm system.
8.3 Typically out of office hours and during weekend working the job holder will be the most senior person on site. Therefore the responsibilities for action regarding the safety of all site personnel and property in their ultimate decision.
8.4 In event of emergencies act as the co-ordinator with external emergency services. Notifying Senior Management as and when required.
