Assistant Buyer

Job Purpose
To evaluate, select and manage best value suppliers for the quotation and purchase of goods and services for our client and their customers. To be a source of procurement advice and deliver procurement services to internal and external customers.


Key Result Areas
• Process quotations and orders in accordance with SLAs
• Negotiate with suppliers and customers on issues such as prices, delivery dates or specifications. This may involve arranging supplier meetings and carrying out value for money assessments.
• Develop and build relationships with internal and external customers
• Manage vendors within a commodity group
• Liaise with customers on a regular basis to ensure that they are fully appraised of order and quotation progress
• Raise and authorise orders up to limits of published authority and ensure orders meet commercial requirements.
• Resolve queries and problems raised by customers
• Ensure that purchasing support systems are used and updated on a timely basis so that internal and external stakeholders have accurate and up-to-date information

• Provide management information as and when required
• Adopt, embrace and demonstrate the company’s values and beliefs
• An adequate knowledge of and compliance with the Health and Safety policy and regulations consistent with their responsibilities

Essential Qualifications/Experience
• Qualified to NVQ Level 2 in procurement, or equivalent qualification
• GCSE or equivalent qualification in Maths and English
• Previous experience in a Purchasing department or environment
• Strong customer service ethos
• Thoroughly computer literate, particularly in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
• Knowledge of current purchasing principles and techniques
• Strong communication skills and a professional manner
• A working knowledge of Vendor Management
• Good organisation and time management skills
• Self-motivated with a desire to ‘make a difference’ and to deliver
• Ability to work under pressure and to use own initiative
