Technical Writer
TECHNICAL WRITER
SUMMARY
You will create first-class documentation for clientss knowledge-management
products. Reporting to the Director of Technical Publications and working as
an active member of development teams in the U.K. and in North America, you will
design, write, and maintain technical manuals, online help, documentation plans,
and related technical documents in print and in a variety of electronic media.
Your projects will include creating and updating highly technical materials for
mission-critical products that enable customers to publish, navigate, search,
and classify information on corporate or government intranets.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Use your advanced writing skills to design, schedule, write, and edit
technical documents, online help, and release notes.
- Perform research to determine document scope, content, purpose, and audience.
Prepare and communicate documentation plans and schedules.
- Act as advocate for the user during product development. Provide usability
feedback to the development team.
- Use functional specifications, other source material, and interviews with
developers and other internal sources.
- With help as needed, develop drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to
illustrate material.
- Interact with developers and quality assurance personnel in Cambridge and
in the U.S. and Canada on a daily basis.
- Manage your projects independently. Closely track product-development
progress and issues. Complete final documentation on schedule, including
providing final materials for product build and manufacturing.
- Attend regularly scheduled and extemporaneous meetings with other technical
writers and product development teams. Set up documentation review meetings
as appropriate.
- Participate in Technical Publications team projects.
REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:
- BS/BA degree plus two to five years related experience and/or training
- Experience writing software technical documentation.
- Experience with the following tools: FrameMaker, HTML authoring tools,
drawing/screen capture tools.
- Experience working with Web servers, application servers, or databases
is preferred. Experience or interest in working with APIs and Java tools
is a plus.
Skills:
- Excellent grammar, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Ability to generate technical instructions and explain abstract concepts.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments with tight deadlines.
- Ability to prioritise conflicting demands and obligations.
- Attention to detail.
- Excellent planning and organisational skills.
